Kings Day

Train schedule on King's Day 2022 in the Netherlands

On Wednessday April 27th it is King's Day again! And just like in previous years, NS has a special timetable just for King's Day.

In addition to changes to the train service, there are also different rules in effect, both in the train and at the station. An overview of these rules can be found at the bottom of this page.

King's Day in Maastricht

This year King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will celebrate King's Day in Maastricht. All activities in Maastricht are in the city center, within walking distance of the main train station of Maastricht. Want to see the royal family up close in Maastricht? Then take the train to Maastricht, you walk straight into the city center and you don't have to worry about parking. You can plan your trip easily and quickly in our journey planner.

King's Day in Amsterdam

Many festivities will take place in Amsterdam during King's Day. As such, the timetable has been adjusted to ensure that everyone is able to take a train to the capital. Two stations will be closed on the 27th of April: Amsterdam RAI and Amsterdam Science Park. The subway station of Amsterdam RAI will also be closed during King's Day. Passengers for Amsterdam RAI can use Amsterdam Zuid station, from where you can take the metro (or walk) into the city. Travellers to Amsterdam Science Park can make use of Amsterdam Amstel station.

Amsterdam is expected to be very busy. If you are travelling to Amsterdam, consider travelling not to Amsterdam Central Station, but to alternative stations such as Amsterdam South (from the direction of Schiphol, The Hague or Rotterdam) or Amsterdam Amstel (from the direction of Utrecht). From the direction of Noord-Holland (Zaandam, Alkmaar or Haarlem) you can get off at Amsterdam Sloterdijk and take a bus or tram to the city centre. This way you can avoid the worst crowds at Amsterdam Central Station.

The Leidseplein square and Vondelpark are easy to reach by foot from Amsterdam Zuid station.

Tip: for the way back, take a look at the live departure times or in the app to see at what time your train departs and from which platform.

Schiphol

Trains to and from Schiphol run as usual on King's Day, so if you need to catch a flight on 27 April, you can just travel by train. To be on the safe side, it's better to leave half an hour earlier, as the trains are much more crowded than usual. Leaving earlier gives you a little more margin to catch your flight in time.

To be sure, plan your trip with the journey planner, as some trains may have a slightly different timetable on King's Day.

Intercity Direct

Intercity Direct will run like normal. Between Schiphol and Rotterdam Central Station a surcharge is also mandatory on King's Day.

Special rules in the train and at the station

During King's Night (the night from the 26th to the 27th of April) and on King's Day itself, it is forbidden to drink alcohol on the train and at the station (in the whole country). This applies to the drinking of alcohol as well as to the transport of alcohol. This rule applies from 26 April 19.00 hours to 28 April 7.00 hours. Shops at railway stations will also not sell alcoholic beverages during this period.

Luggage lockers are closed at various stations. At Amsterdam Amstel station, Amsterdam Central, Alkmaar, Haarlem, 's-Hertogenbosch, Eindhoven, Tilburg, Breda, Groningen and Amersfoort the lockers are closed from 26 April 19.00 hours until 28 April 7.00 hours. At Utrecht Central Station, the lockers close early, on 25 April at 19.30 hours.
