Trains from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam

When you arrive in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of the easiest ways to travel to Amsterdam is by train. On average, there are 10 trains per hour which take you in approximately 15 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station, and a ticket will cost you € 4.20.

Schiphol Airport’s railway station is conveniently located in a tunnel immediately below the main entrance of the airport. From the arrivals section, it is a 2-minute walk to the entrance of the railway station. From Schiphol Airport, trains depart to many major stations in the Netherlands, including all railway stations in Amsterdam. Trains run all day until 1:00 AM, and during the night, every hour a train departs to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.

You can take every train which runs from Schiphol to Amsterdam, except for Thalys trains. Other than that, every train (local trains or intercity trains) are allowed. Ensure that you take the correct train: not all trains will call at Amsterdam Central station. The easiest way to find your train is by using the journey planner or by looking at the Schiphol airport train departures. (Schiphol airport offers free wifi which you can use to find your train after picking up your luggage.)

Tickets from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam

It is not needed to make reservations or to pay a supplement when taking a train from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam Central station. Tickets can be bought at the station, or online with B-Europe (pay by credit card, Maestro or PayPal).

When buying tickets from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central station, choose second class, as you probably won’t need the additional comfort of first class for the 15-minute train ride. The NS ticket machines will offer you to buy train tickets at a discounted price. These discounts are only allowed if you posesss a NS discount pass.

When you have bought a ticket from a ticket machine, you must ‘check in’ (validate) your ticket with an OV-chipkaart validator. On Schiphol airport, the validators are placed near the escalators leading to the platforms.
